When working on an IO Bus device, you should:
  1) Halt the computer
  2) POWER DOWN THE DEVICE (this keeps the frying of circuits to a minimum)
  3) unplug the device, or cable, or whatever
  4) Do what you must
  5) Undo steps 3:1, in reverse order
  6) If the system is running, you might have to go into DDT and CONO the
device PIA assignments back to what they should be(!). The system
can get very confused (read wedged) if a device interrupts in the
     wrong channel.
